A Bright Green Beginning to 2017

Sherwin Williams does it, Benjamin Moore does it and so does Pantone. A few weeks back, Pantone released their 2017 Color of the Year, Greenery to an audience of color enthusiasts, interior and graphic designers alike.

Before the color was announced, I must have been subconsciously channeling green. In a recent master bathroom update, I encouraged my clients to boldly paint their cabinets a deep green color (Sherwin Williams 6475 Country Squire). Not quite Greenery but wow, did it make an impact!

The color Greenery reflects the global cultural climates and influences many faucets such as architecture/interior design, fashion, and even food. Greenery, is described as a yellow-green hue representing and signifying a new year, fresh start, grass, outdoors, environment  Oh, how we need one of those!

Could you see yourself using this color in your home, painted on your walls, cabinets or as pillow fabric for your sofa. Do you love this color and not sure how to use it? I’d be more than happy to show you how! Call or email us for a cheeky Green consultation!

50 Shades of Grey: Sherwin William 7000s

I know what you’re thinking but the 50 shades I’m referring to are colors not the character. For the past few years I have really enjoyed using all shades of a grey for back drops in my client’s homes. My most favorite grey shades can be found in the Sherwin William 7000 Series. Below are some of my top picks.

A couple tips when selecting and sampling paint color. Paint looks different at different times of the day. Sun can have a big impact on how the paint shows up on a wall. I like to sample paint on a white piece of cardboard, preferably 12″ x 12″ in size. You can easily move the cardboard piece around without having to paint directly on your walls. Be mindful when sampling paint. Most manufacturers only sell sample sizes in a satin or eggshell finish. So if you are aiming for a flat finish know that the sample may have a little more sheen than what you specify in the end.

On Trend: Heavy Metals

Not sure about you but my affinity for all things metallic is growing everyday. We have become accustom to brushed nickel, stainless steel, chrome and oil rubbed bronze but brass and gold are making a strong and not to be ignored debut.

Don’t worry, its not the brass and gold of yesteryear. The reinvented finishes finishes of today have a contemporary spin making it suitable for all types of uses from pillows and accessories to faucets and lighting.

Featured Project: Paisano Kitchen Remodel

AJID had a lot of fun re-designing this kitchen! Click to view MORE before and after photos!

Below are some kitchen remodel highlights:

Cabinetry: Warm, dark-stained shaker-style Walnut cabinetry. Storage is now concentrated in a larger island and anchored by a large bank of cabinets along cooktop wall.

Countertops: Clean, bright white quartz adds a lighter quality to space.

Lighting: Bright, modern orb pendant light fixtures give the kitchen a touch of whimsy.

Appliances: Although the fridge stayed in its original place the window above existing sink was closed off to accommodate cooktop and vent hood. A wall oven unit now moved to former pantry, and sink moved to island to create the perfect work triangle

Flooring and Tile: Light colored porcelain in 12 x 24s are used to offset the walnut cabinetry. A simple wall of 2 x 2 blue glass tile backsplash gives serenity to the space.

Contemporary New Construction Project: GIBSON

In May of 2013 AJID completed this gem in the ‘04 neighborhood of Austin, Texas.

What makes this home so special is the vibrant personality of the clients. The unique color combinations, the dining table that transforms into a pool table and the quality and selection of furniture make this space ideal for entertaining.

Signature Style

Bravo’s celebrity designers Jeff Lewis and Mary McDonald are great talents in the industry of interior design and many times their clientele hand over a space to them and they take the reigns. Both have not only developed a signature style but have gained the trust of their audience to do so.

Collaboration is an integral part of the AJID design process and I do my very best not to incorporate my personal style into a client’s home. Instead, I focus on how they want to live in their spaces and guide them though the design process with my knowledge and expertise. But I often wondered what it would be like to design spaces completely carte blanch incorporating my own eclectic signature style where India meets France.

Below are two fictional scenarios, a living room and a master bedroom, both very important spaces in a home. Here’s my take if a client with a blank slate said to me, “take it from here, Allison!”

Living Room Story Board

When designing a living room, I begin with the largest piece of furniture, the sofa and work my way down to the smallest piece in the space. The selection of a slate-grey/blue sectional sets the tone for the room and is offset with cream colored accents found in the side table, coffee table and accent chair. Mixing sizes, shapes and styles all aid in tying the living room together. The rug is my favorite piece, although traditional in design, it would work in any space.

Master Bedroom Story Board

More often than not, including myself, a client wants a bedroom room that has a warm inviting feeling and gives them a sense of calm when entering. I selected a monochromatic color scheme for this reason alone. Although the colors are subdued the furniture is unique with nods to the near east and France.

Featured Project: Lakeshore Powder Bath

image

Wallpaper in the last 5 years has made a major comeback. With so many varying materials, colors and patterns, the wallpaper industry is truly your oyster. Let’s say you don’t mind committing to a wallpaper, just not for a large space in your home. In years past, AJID has installed wallpaper in entry ways, accent walls in master bedrooms and powder baths like the one seen above. A powder bath is the perfect opportunity to let your hair down and be as bold as you want.
The Lakeshore powder room is no exception to having fun. This small space went though a full makeover including a new maple stained vanity with Carrera marble counter top. The mirror from Jonathan Adler is a quirky contrast to the more traditional cabinetry. Of course the pièce de rèsistance is the Cole & Son rope wallpaper. If only you could see it in person!
