50 Shades of Grey: Sherwin William 7000s

I know what you’re thinking but the 50 shades I’m referring to are colors not the character. For the past few years I have really enjoyed using all shades of a grey for back drops in my client’s homes. My most favorite grey shades can be found in the Sherwin William 7000 Series. Below are some of my top picks.

A couple tips when selecting and sampling paint color. Paint looks different at different times of the day. Sun can have a big impact on how the paint shows up on a wall. I like to sample paint on a white piece of cardboard, preferably 12″ x 12″ in size. You can easily move the cardboard piece around without having to paint directly on your walls. Be mindful when sampling paint. Most manufacturers only sell sample sizes in a satin or eggshell finish. So if you are aiming for a flat finish know that the sample may have a little more sheen than what you specify in the end.

Colorways: Freish Paint Ideas

This month, AJID attended Sherwin-Williams Colormix 2013 event where next year’s color forecast was revealed.  As designers, we realize all the potential a color possesses to transform a space.  Check out these colors recently used in a project.

SW6222 Riverway
Deep, reflective, a chance to decompress. This color is true to its name, relaxing and cool.
SW6913 Funky Yellow
Bright, cheerful, but not over zealous. This yellow is a warm color, but perfectly toned as to not being offensive. And when used well, provides some much needed cheerfulness during those overcast days.
SW6227 Meditative
Clean and clear, like the sky in the early morning light. This blue lets you meditate on the day to come, providing a feeling of serenity and calm.

Radiant Orchid: Pantone Color of the Year 2014

“Spruce up interior spaces by incorporating this eye-catching hue in paint, accent pieces and accessories. As adaptable as it is beautiful, Radiant Orchid complements olive and deeper hunter greens, and offers a gorgeous combination when paired with turquoise, teal and even light yellows.
Likewise, the vibrant color is sure to liven up neutrals including gray, beige and taupe. Uplifting and bold without being overpowering, Radiant Orchid reenergizes almost any color palette and provides a unifying element for diverse spaces.”  Courtesy of Pantone.com
In other words, Radiant Orchid is a bright color not for the faint of heart!  Being a purple hue, it’s color psychology is that of regality and the exotic. We particularly like the idea of sparking a neutral palette with this color. It’s also a color that will welcome in the spring season nicely.

Let your walls do some talking-Part 1

I’m not sure why so many people are afraid of paint on their walls. It took my own mother twenty years to leave her white walls behind for color and when she did what a difference it made.

Painting your walls is one of the most cost-effective ways to update a room. Not only that, but it allows you to add impact, brighten the space and create a backdrop for your wall art.

The biggest myth about paint: “Won’t a dark colored wall make the space feel smaller??” Absolutely NOT I say! As long as you stick to a few guidelines, dark colored walls can make room and the objects in the room shine with personality.

Follow these rules when selecting a dark paint:

  • Choose the right room: large rooms with high ceiling and natural light, powder baths where not much time is spent, hallways for a dramatic or glam feel.
  • Contrast is key: Off set the dark walls with white trim and molding, add objects in the room like fabric, art, drapery and rugs that are light colored.
  • Make the room sparkle: Mirrors, crystal or glass lamps and acrylic furniture items bring brightness to the space while amplifying the colors you’ve chosen.

Here are a few choice examples of how much of a dramatic sophisticated impact dark painted walls can have on a space:

Given the opportunity I would have so much fun designing a room around dark walls. Who’s up for a paint job!?!?
